RESUMO

The frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has increased over the last two decades, a phenomenon enhanced by global climate change. However, the effects of climate change will not be distributed equally, and Chile has emerged as one important, vulnerable area. The Chilean Patagonian region (41‒56°S) hosts two marine ecoregions that support robust blue economies via wild fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. However, the harmful algal bloom-forming dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, a causative agent of paralytic shellfish poisoning outbreaks, threatens the viability of blue industries in this region and others worldwide. Despite the proliferation of A. catenella blooms over the last few decades, the role of sedimentary resting cysts in the recurrence of harmful algal blooms and the species' northward expansion across Chilean Patagonia is not well understood. As a resting cyst-producing species, the sediment-cyst dynamics of A. catenella likely contribute to the geographical expansion and bloom recurrence of this species. For this purpose, we analyzed a decade of A. catenella surface sediment cyst records across the two ecoregions of the Chilean Patagonian System that were further stratified into five subregions based on water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient characteristics. We also analyzed spatio-temporal cyst dynamics in a pre-, during-, and post-bloom scenario of the Chiloense ecoregion (more northern) of the Magellanic province. Our results indicated highly variable A. catenella resting cyst abundances, with a maximum of 221 cysts cm-3 recorded in 2002 after an intense bloom. Generalized linear mixed models and linear mixed models found that sampling season, subregion, and Total Organic Matter (%) explained resting cyst presence and density. The results also demonstrated the presence of A. catenella cysts in northern subregions, evidencing the northward geographical expansion observed during the last few decades. The risks of A. catenella bloom recurrence from small, patchy resting cyst distributions across broad geographical areas and under changing environmental conditions are discussed.

Introduction: the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) has high sensitivity and specificity for the identification of people at risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) in various populations. Therefore, we aimed to use this index to identify individuals at risk of having alterations in fasting glycemia (FG) and HbA1c among those who underwent laboratory analysis at ALAC, Argentina. Objectives: to explore the relationships of the FINDRISC score with the fasting blood glucose (FG) concentration and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, and to establish appropriate cut-off scores to predict FG ≥100 mg/dL and HbA1c ≥5.7% (38.8 mmol/mol) in this population. Materials and methods: we recruited 1,175 individuals from 45 ALAC laboratories for whom FG and HbA1c had been measured. We analyzed the data using the chi square test, odds ratios, ANOVA plus Tukey's post-hoc test, binomial logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: total FINDRISC score significantly positively correlated with both FG and HbA1c. Of the constituent variables, age ≥45 years, a large waist circumference, a body mass index ≥25 kg/m., a close family history of DM, and the use of antihypertensive medication were significantly associated with FG ≥100 mg/dL and/or HbA1c ≥5.7% (38.8 mmol/mol). However, no significant association was found with physical activity or the daily consumption of fruit and vegetables. The mean FG and HbA1c for individuals with total FINDRISC scores ≤11 were 89.9 mg/dL and 5.2% (33.0 mmol/mol), respectively, which increased to 116.1 mg/dL and 6.1% (43.0 mmol/mol) for individuals with scores ≥21, with a dose/response-type relationship. ROC analysis showed that a FINDRISC of 13 was associated with a sensitivity of 81.89%, a specificity of 67.60%, and a correct diagnosis rate of 70.55% for HbA1c ≥5.7% (38.8 mmol/mol); and a sensitivity of 72.50%, a specificity of 70.62%, and a correct diagnosis rate of 71.20% for FG ≥100 mg/dL. Conclusions: FINDRISC score increases with increasing FG and HbA1c, and is a useful means of identifying people with FG ≥100 mg/dL and HbA1c ≥5.7% (38.8 mmol/mol).

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The oral cavity constitutes a unique ecosystem with highly variable ecological niches that harbor a great variety of microorganisms, including yeasts. Molecular methods are currently considered the gold standard for identifying species, although they involve limitations associated with the disruption of yeast cell walls to release the genomic DNA (gDNA) for amplification. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the performance of different methods for extracting gDNA from Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis, subsequently amplifying DNA by PCR. Materials and Method: Fifty-two isolates (16 C. albicans and 36 C. dubliniensis) were obtained from subgingival biofilm of HIV+ patients with clinical signs of periodontal disease. The study evaluated 6 gDNA extraction methods and two PCR amplification methods. Furthermore, the presence of alleles of HWP1 gene was determined in C. albicans. Results: Comparisons of six methods show statistically significant differences (p<0.001) except for C. albicans in two of them. For C. dubliniensis, statistical differences were observed in all comparisons. Commercial methods were more efficient for concentrating gDNA than in-house methods, and both PCRs were effective. Ten heterozygous C. albicans isolates for this allele were positive for the HWP1-1 / HWP1-2 allele, one was homozygous for Wild Type HWP1-1 allele, and 5 were homozygous for novel/rare HWP1-2 allele. Conclusions: This study aims to provide simple, inexpensive strategies for phenotypic identification and molecular confirmation of Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis for non-reference laboratories with low complexity and/or low budgets.

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop and validate a questionnaire that allows a systematic evaluation of the impact of self-perceived oral health on expectations of getting a job on adult population seeking dental care, and to describe its associations with demographic characteristics, job related, and health coverage variables. We designed a descriptive cross-sectional study including men and women aged 18 to 65 years from a population seeking dental services in a walk-in clinic. In a first stage we design and validated an instrument on a sample of 100 subjects. The questionnaire was registered in a Likert scale, with higher scores represented higher impact of the oral status self-perception on employability. We calculated internal consistency, construct validity, and domains validation. The final instrument consisted in an 18-item questionnaire (Cronbach α = 0.814), grouped into two domains based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The total variance explained with values >1 was 66 percent, grouping questions into six components. One domain refers to oral health status and importance of dental aesthetics, while the other refers to specific job-seeking elements. In a second stage we applied the questionnaire on 800 participants from the same population of reference. Women, people who intended to change jobs, those younger than 40 years old, having health insurance, and higher educational level showed statistically significant higher scores than their counterparts (p<0.001). We developed a tool that enables evaluating the impact of self-perceived oral health on expectations of getting a job for adults seeking emergency care in a dental clinic.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Various theories have endeavored to explain how knowledge is accessed. Students, in order to learn, need a good repertoire of appropriate metacognitive and self-regulating strategies and knowledge, which they use consciously or unconsciously. Teachers, in addition to knowing how to teach, need to be aware of students' learning strategies, metacognition, and self-regulation, and of the impact of changes associated with recent pandemic scenarios. Aim: The aim of this study was to identify the study strategies preferred by dental students in two different scenarios: prior to and during the pandemic. Materials and Method: The sample consisted of third-year dentistry students at Buenos Aires University (UBA) during 2019 (Group GP, 141 students, face-toface activity) and 2021 (Group GE, 60 students, e-learning during the pandemic). Participants were asked (a) to provide demographic information (sex and age) and (b) to answer the abridged ACRA scale. Statistical treatment included descriptive tests; Chi2, binomial exact and Student's t-test (p<0.05). Results: The proportion of students who participated with respect to total students enrolled was 58.50% in 2019 and 26.20% in 2021, with female gender being significantly higher. There were significant differences in total number of participants during the different periods (p=0.001), and in gender distribution during the pandemic (p=0.007). Comparison between groups GP and GE showed no significant difference regarding preferences expressed in total values for the scale or for the domains. Analysis of preferences according to gender showed significant differences in total group (p=0.007) and the domains CLCS (Cognitive and Learning Control Strategies) (p= 0.008) and LSS (Learning Support Strategies) (p=0.002). The mean values of preferences selected by females were higher. Similar results were found upon analyzing preferences during the pandemic (n= 60) considering total score (p= 0.033) and the domains CLCS (p= 0.035) and LSS (p= 0.007). Conclusions: The study identified trends towards an increase in the score and consequently greater use of techniques included in the domains related to metacognition, especially among women. There is potential neutralization of the impact created by the methodological shift between the two periods (face-to-face and e-learning) probably as a result of the implicit adaptability, latent in students, regarding digital methodology, which enables them to adapt to learning in challenging situations.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are recurrent in the NW Patagonia fjords system and their frequency has increased over the last few decades. Outbreaks of HAB species such as Alexandrium catenella, a causal agent of paralytic shellfish poisoning, and Protoceratium reticulatum, a yessotoxins producer, have raised considerable concern due to their adverse socioeconomic consequences. Monitoring programs have mainly focused on their planktonic stages, but since these species produce benthic resting cysts, the factors influencing cyst distributions are increasingly gaining recognition as potentially important to HAB recurrence in some regions. Still, a holistic understanding of the physico-chemical conditions influencing cyst distribution in this region is lacking, especially as it relates to seasonal changes in drivers of cyst distributions, as the characteristics that favor cyst preservation in the sediment may change through the seasons. In this study, we analyzed the physico-chemical properties of the sediment (temperature, pH, redox potential) and measured the bottom dissolved oxygen levels in a "hotspot" area of southern Chile, sampling during the spring and summer as well as the fall and winter, to determine the role these factors may play as modulators of dinoflagellate cyst distribution, and specifically for the cysts of A. catenella and P. reticulatum. A permutational analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed the significant effect of sediment redox conditions in explaining the differences in the cyst assemblages between spring-summer and fall-winter periods (seasonality). In a generalized linear model (GLM), sediment redox potential and pH were associated with the highest abundances of A. catenella resting cysts in the spring-summer, however it was sediment temperature that most explained the distribution of A. catenella in the fall-winter. For P. reticulatum, only spring-summer sediment redox potential and temperature explained the variation in cyst abundances. The implications of environmental (physico-chemical) seasonality for the resting cysts dynamics of both species are discussed.

Introduction: some studies have shown that fasting blood glucose values between 100 and 109 mg/dL are associated with high rates of prediabetes when the classification criteria are HbA1c values. The Argentine Diabetes Society still maintains 110 mg/dL as the value from which a patient is classified as having impaired fasting blood glucose; the frequency of individuals possibly incorrectly classified, according to this criterion, is not yet known in any Argentine population. Objectives: to establish the frequency in a population without a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus with fasting blood glucose levels between 100 and 109 mg/dL in which prediabetes occurs according to HbA1c, to correlate both variables and to quantify the probability that this predicts with respect to others with fasting blood glucose levels <100 mg/dL. Materials and methods: 1.002 samples from the same number of subjects from 45 clinical laboratories belonging to ALAC, with local processing of blood glucose and centralized processing of HbA1c by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Statistical analysis: chi square, odds ratio, Pearson correlation coefficient, coefficient of determination and Durbin-Watson serial correlation. Results: frequency of HbA1c ≥5.7% in the studied population with fasting blood glucose levels between 100 and 109 mg/ dL = 29.7%, chi square test: p<0.001; odds ratio of having HbA1c ≥5.7% between the population with fasting blood glucose levels of 100 to 109 mg/dL vs that one with values <100 mg/dL=4.328 (95% CI 2.922-6.411); r=0.852, r2 =0.727, DurbinWatson=1.152. Conclusions: prediabetes diagnosed by HbA1c was four times more frequent in the studied population with fasting glucose values between 100 and 109 mg/dL than in that one with values below 100 mg/dL.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of two methods for collecting saliva samples from infants under 2 years of age for cariogenic streptococci (CS) count. Two collection methods were applied in 11 infants. In Method (A), saliva samples were collected by swabbing the inner cheek mucosa and floor of the mouth in figure of eight motions with a sterile cotton swab until it was soaked. In method (B), saliva samples were collected by aspiration of 1 ml of saliva with a sterile plastic syringe on the floor of the mouth, after stimulation with glove. The samples were cultured in modified Gold's broth (MSMG), and on trypticase, yeast extract, sucrose, cystine and bacitracin culture medium (TYSCB). In method (A), the swab with the sample was unloaded in situ on TYSCB and placed in PBS medium for transport. Then, 100 µl of the eluate was seeded in MSMG. In method (B) 100 µl were seeded in TYSCB and 100 µl in MSMG. Both culture media were incubatedundercapnophilicconditions for 48 hours at 37 °C. Colony forming units (CFU/ml) were counted by calibrated operators (kappa = 0.75). The presence of cariogenic streptococci (CS) (Streptococcus mutans-Streptococcus sobrinus) was determined by qPCR in the samples collected by both methods. The CFU/ml counts in MSMG differed significantly between methods (p = 0.021). In TYSCB, the recovery of CFU/ml was higher in method (A), without significant difference (p = 0.705). The molecular technique detected presence of CS, with no difference between collection methods. Collecting saliva samples by swabbing proved more effective in terms of recovery of microorganisms, and did not affect the detection of presence of CS by molecular techniques.

Abstract To assess the impact of oral conditions on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in infants in ten Latin America countries (LAC). A cross-sectional study was conducted with 930 pairs of 1-to-3-year-old children/parents from 10 LAC, as a complementary study of the Research Observatory for Dental Caries of the Latin American Region. The scale ECOHIS, previously tested and valid in ten countries, was applied to parents/caregivers of children to measure OHRQoL. Statistical analysis included descriptive data analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA-One-Way) were performed to compare age groups with OHRQoL. Bootstrapping procedures (1000 re-samplings; 95%CI Bca) were performed. The mean scores of the 'Child Impact' section in the LAC was 4.0(±8.3), in the 'Family Impact' section was 2.0(±4.0), and in overall ECOHIS score was 6.0(±12.0). In the 'Child Impact' section, Argentina 10.0(+2.4) and Venezuela 17.8(±17.5) demonstrated mean scores higher than the LAC total data. In the 'Family Impact' section, the countries with higher mean scores were Argentina 4.9(±2.0), Ecuador 2.1(±3.1) and Venezuela 7.9(±7.8). In the overall ECOHIS score, Argentina 15.1 (±4.1) and Venezuela 25.7(±25.2) has higher mean scores than the values of LAC. There is an association between children's age and parents' report of impact on the OHRQoL (p<0.001). Three-year-olds had a higher mean when compared to one- and two-year-olds, both in the Impact on the Child and Impact on the Family (p<0.001) sections, as well as in the overall ECOHIS (p<0.001). In conclusion, there are differences in OHRQoL among Latin American countries, impacting older children more significantly.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fish oil is an important source of healthy ω-3 fatty acids to be used in functional foods. However, its autoxidation susceptibility, aroma and solubility make it difficult to use. Its encapsulation could reduce these disadvantages. This manuscript focuses on the drying stage of the encapsulation process. Its objective was to study the encapsulation of fish oil with soy proteins by emulsification and lyophilization and compare microparticles characteristics with those processed identically but spray dried. RESULTS: Microparticles with different protein/oil ratios were prepared by emulsification and lyophilization. Soy proteins encapsulated fish oil in matrix-type microcapsules masking its typical odor and oily appearance. Microparticles dried by lyophilization showed a better solid recovery but lower encapsulation efficiency than those spray dried. Increasing protein/oil mass ratio of initial formulations seemed to favor initial lipid oxidation, but these differences were not appreciated when analyzing the oxidative stability over time (measured by Rancimat test). Porous structure and large surface area of lyophilized samples would favor oxygen easy penetration and exposition to free radicals, increasing lipid oxidation over time, while spray dried microparticles showed a good oxidative stability over time, like that of free oil. CONCLUSION: Drying processes were determinants in the morphology of microcapsules, the efficiency of encapsulation and protection exerted on the oil. Although emulsifying and drying processes caused certain initial oil oxidation, soy proteins managed to mask fish oil flavors and spray dried systems showed a good perspective of oxidative stability of fish oil over time, better than that of lyophilized microparticles. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Aim: To compare technical-care performance of 2 dental care programs with the same care protocols and different implementation modalities. Both programs shared the following features: preventive-promotional profile; use of validated clinical protocols according to biological risk, dental care adapted to non-conventional settings, allocation of resources by needs method; supervised pre-professional human resource and modulation by discharges. The implementation mode differed in the density/concentration of the activities: in the extensive program (EP) the actions were implemented on a weekly basis along the year; in the intensive program (IP) the actions were concentrated in one week in the year. Annual coverage of the programs: 180 schoolchildren and preschoolers (3 -12 years old); EP = 120 schoolchildren (6 - 9 years old). We measured the following variables: the number of dental services performed, the number of sessions and the time, in minutes, to reach the basic operating discharge (BOD). We used the following tests to compare groups (IP and EP): Mann Whitney U; Student's t for independent samples, chi square and comparison of proportions test. The action per session ratio was significantly higher (p=0.000) in the intensive program. The number of actions performed until discharge (BOD) and the time per session ratio did not show differences between programs (p=0.8 p=0.087). In the extensive mode, compared to intensive mode, it took longer to reach discharge (BOD) (p=0.000) The program implemented with intensive modality (PI) showed greater efficiency regarding technical-care performance when compared to the extensive mode (AU)

RESUMO

This review summarizes the safety and efficacy of statins in patients with cirrhosis. Due to concerns about the safety of statins in patients with impaired liver function, they have recently been investigated as a potential treatment option in cirrhosis. The most clinically significant adverse event is statin-related myopathy, and this may be related to the high serum statin concentrations in the setting of severely impaired liver function. Rhabdomyolysis is the most serious and potentially life-threatening manifestation. It has recently been demonstrated that the recommended dose of simvastatin in patients with decompensated cirrhosis would be 20 mg/d because higher values, such as 40 mg/d, are associated with many adverse events, especially muscle injury. Likewise, simvastatin should not be administered to patients with Model for End-stage Liver Disease score > 12 and/or Child-Pugh class C because of the high risk of severe muscle injury. Due to the pleiotropic effects, the focus on statins has shifted from being considered harmful to something useful. Through these effects, statins could prevent liver-related morbidity and mortality in cirrhotic patients. Observational studies in large populations of patients with cirrhosis have shown that treatment with statins to decrease high cholesterol levels was associated with a reduced risk of hepatic decompensation, hepatocellular carcinoma development and death. The few randomized controlled trials in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension showed that statins lower portal pressure, quite likely through a reduction in hepatic resistance. Another large randomized controlled trial in patients with variceal bleeding showed that simvastatin in addition to standard of care did not prevent rebleeding but improved survival rate. Despite these encouraging outcomes, the quality of the evidence regarding the use of statins is low or very low due to the observational characteristics of most of the studies involved. Therefore, it is advisable to perform further randomized controlled trials on a large series of patients with hard clinical endpoints, using different statin types and varying doses. The objectives would be to prevent liver-related morbidity and mortality rather than treating cirrhosis complications to take additional information that makes it possible to add statins to the standard of care of these patients.

RESUMO

Salmonid Rickettsial Septicaemia (SRS), caused by Piscirickettsia salmonis, is the most important infectious disease in the Chilean salmon farming industry. An opportunity to control this disease is to use functional micronutrients to modulate host mechanisms of response to the infection. Since P. salmonis may affect the host antioxidant system in salmonids, particularly that dependent on selenium (Se), we hypothesized that fish's dietary selenium supplementation could improve the response to the bacterial infection. To address this, we defined a non-antibiotic, non-cytotoxic concentration of selenium to evaluate its effect on the response to in vitro infections of SHK-1 cells with P. salmonis. The results indicated that selenium supplementation reduced the cytopathic effect, intracellular bacterial load, and cellular mortality of SHK-1 by increasing the abundance and activity of host glutathione peroxidase. We then prepared diets supplemented with selenium up to 1, 5, and 10 mg/kg to feed juvenile trout for 8 weeks. At the end of this feeding period, we obtained their blood plasma and evaluated its ability to protect SHK-1 cells from infection with P. salmonis in ex vivo assays. These results recapitulated the observed ability of selenium to protect against infection with P. salmonis by increasing the concentration of selenium and the antioxidant capacity in fish's plasma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the protective capacity of selenium against P. salmonis infection in salmonids, becoming a potential effective host-directed dietary therapy for SRS and other infectious diseases in animals at a non-antibiotic concentration.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to establish the correlation between an index for caries treatment needs and an index for caries lesions detection and evaluation. A cross-sectional study was performed on three samples of children aged 3 (n = 302), 5 (n = 183), and 11-14 years old (n = 60), attending early childhood centers and schools in the cities of Avellaneda, Rio Grande, and Buenos Aires. Dental caries treatment needs were estimated on every child through the Caries Treatment Needs Index (CTNI) for programming resources allocation. Also, a diagnosis of dental caries was made according to ICDAS II criteria. After the diagnostic procedures, a dental care program was developed. The ICDAS II variable was operationalized by grouping the codes into four categories: G1: code 0; G2: code 1-2; G3: code 3; G4: code 4-5-6. Measures of central tendency and dispersion were calculated for both variables, and the correlation was calculated using the Spearman coefficient. Results revealed that in the group of 3-year-old children, a significant correlation was observed in G1 (rho = -0.822); G2 (rho = 0.330); G3 (rho = 0.509) and G4 (rho = 0.710) between both indexes. For the group of 5-year-old children, a significant correlation was observed in G1 (rho = -0.821); G2 (rho = 0.260); G3 (rho = 0.344) and G4 (rho = 0.840). In the group of children 11-14 years of age, a significant correlation was observed in G1 (rho = -0.692); G3 (rho = 0.437) and G4 (rho = 0.764). The indices analyzed in this study (CTNI and ICDAS II) show reasonable equivalence for use in clinical and epidemiological studies based on the statistical analysis.

Salmonid Rickettsial Septicaemia (SRS), caused by Piscirickettsia salmonis, is a severe bacterial disease in the Chilean salmon farming industry. Vaccines and antibiotics are the current strategies to fight SRS; however, the high frequency of new epizootic events confirms the need to develop new strategies to combat this disease. An innovative opportunity is perturbing the host pathways used by the microorganisms to replicate inside host cells through host-directed antimicrobial drugs (HDAD). Iron is a critical nutrient for P. salmonis infection; hence, the use of iron-chelators becomes an excellent alternative to be used as HDAD. The aim of this work was to use the iron chelator Deferiprone (DFP) as HDAD to treat SRS. Here, we describe the protective effect of the iron chelator DFP over P. salmonis infections at non-antibiotic concentrations, in bacterial challenges both in vitro and in vivo. At the cellular level, our results indicate that DFP reduced the intracellular iron content by 33.1% and P. salmonis relative load during bacterial infections by 78%. These findings were recapitulated in fish, where DFP reduced the mortality of rainbow trout challenged with P. salmonis in 34.9% compared to the non-treated group. This is the first report of the protective capacity of an iron chelator against infection in fish, becoming a potential effective host-directed therapy for SRS and other animals against ferrophilic pathogens.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Candida dubliniensis (Cd) and Candida albicans (Ca) are the most frequently isolated yeasts in HIV+ patients. Some of the enzymes produced by these yeasts are considered virulence factors since they contribute to pathogenicity of Candida spp. The aim of the present study was to compare production of enzymes such as phospholipase (Ph), proteinase (P), and hemolysin (H) by Cd and Ca strains isolated from periodontal HIV-positive patients receiving and not receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Subgingival biofilm samples were obtained using paper points, and a sample of oral mucosa was taken using a swab. Phenotypic and molecular methods were used to isolate 39 strains of Candida, including 25 strains of Cd and 14 strains of Ca, obtained from 33 periodontal pocket samples and 6 oral mucosa samples collected from 15 HIV+ patients (8 receiving and 7 not receiving HAART). Malt egg-yolk agar, albumin agar and blood agar were used to evaluate pH, P and H production respectively. The strains were inoculated in duplicate and incubated at 37 ºC. Colony and halo diameters were measured. A greater proportion of Ca was observed in patients not receiving HAART, and a higher proportion of Cd was observed in those under HAART, Chi2 p< 0.001. Phospholipase production was observed in 92.9% percent of isolated Ca strains but in none of the isolated Cd strains. Proteinase production was high in Ca and Cd strains isolated from patients not receiving HAART. Hemolysin production was observed in all the studied strains, though it was significantly higher (p=0.04) in Ca and Cd strains isolated from patients not receiving HAART. To sum up, the proportion of Candida dubliniensis strains was highest in the subgingival biofilm of patients receiving HAART, and Cd strains were found to express fewer virulence factors than Ca strains.

The dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella is responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning and negative socioeconomic impacts on the fishing industry and aquaculture. In Chilean Patagonia, the reasons underlying the significant increase in the geographical extension (from south to north) of A. catenella blooms during the last five decades are not well understood. To assess the potential spreading risk of A. catenella during an intense austral summer bloom, we conducted an in situ experiment in a "hotspot" of this dinoflagellate in southern Chile. The objective was to assess the accumulation of A. catenella resting cysts in passive (fishing nets) and active (mussels) dispersal agents during the phase of bloom decline. Large numbers of resting cysts were detected in fishing nets (maximum of 5334 cysts net-1 per month) at 5 m depth and in mussels (maximum of 16 cysts g-1 of digestive gland) near Vergara Island. The potential of these vectors to serve as inoculum sources and the implications of our findings for A. catenella population dynamics are discussed.
